The Servant’s Song

July 27, 2008

This Sunday our incoming 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders will meet for Early Elementary Youth at 12:30.  We will play a few games to help us get to know each other better and a few games to burn off some energy.  If the weather is favorable we will spend some of our time outside maybe playing kickball or a couple of tag games.

Junior High Youth meet Sunday at 5:00.  It’s DODGE BALL night and maybe a game or two of ultimate Frisbee.  Don’t forget to bring $5 for dinner.  This is a great time for our incoming 7th graders to join us while our outgoing 8th graders are still welcome to join us too.

Recently the Prayer Garden was upgraded and additional planting was done, a new tree was planted to replace the one damaged in a recent storm, and two new benches were donated.  Our thanks to Alex Ails for this work!  Alex is an Eagle Scout candidate who did these projects as part of his service project.  Alex is from Terrell, Texas.

The Men’s Softball Team lost to COMD and defeated Creekview to move to 4-1 and remain in 1st place.  Our next game is Monday, 7/28, at 7:30 pm at Ford #2.

Small Blessings Preschool still has openings for the fall semester! Serving children ages 18 month through 5 years old.  For more information, please call Stacey Mitchell at 972-396-0038.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR KAMP

KAMP Kids After-school Mentoring Program is planning for the start up this August.  "Math and More" will be a three day review of math, reading, and more provided for the KAMP kids before school starts. The dates will be announced very soon.

The start date for KAMP will be August 25th.  It will be held every Monday and Wednesday 3 - 5 pm. for the children attending Boyd Elementary School. We would like you to consider volunteering and commit to a one month or more time slot. We will be helping the children in grades K - 6 with homework, math, reading, games, journal writing, and more.

The few requirements needed to help is to be a mature teen or adult, have an elementary education, and be willing to assist a neighborhood child with their learning.  There is a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place.

We have applied for a grant from Thrivent for Lutherans to financially support this program, but we need YOU to provide your time and talents.  For more information, please contact Susan Seagraves, Becky Mishoe, or Cathy Brown.

BOOK DISCUSSION – AUGUST 10th at 12:30p.m.

Please come to a group discussion about the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.  Debuting on the New York Times Best Seller List, Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.  We’ll meet in the boardroom/adult Sunday School room at 12:30 on August 10th.

Parents!  As you are getting the kids ready for back to school, please bring your gently used clothes (especially jeans) and tennis shoes to church.  Our Boyd families need anything you have.  Don't worry about sizes, they will even take the adult sizes.  Susan Oliver, our contact, will deliver everything we can donate.  Deposit items in the blue bin located in the Fellowship Hall.  Thank You!!

The AMA Food Pantry has been very busy.  In June we served 172 families which is an increase of 30 to 40 families per month.  We need all staple food items, brown paper bags, and especially canned vegetables and canned tuna.  Please bring items and place in the green plastic tub. We also need volunteers to work at the pantry.  Please call Linda Federle or Cheryl Lindberg for information.

ATTENTION ALL WOMEN!!  The Women of Faith National Conference will be August 22-23!  This year's theme is "High Heels, High Hopes, High Calling".  Come with us and celebrate what it means to be the woman God created you to be!  You will laugh and cry and take notes and you will be thankful you came!  We have 3 rooms (max of 4 per room) reserved for those who want to stay overnight.  The cost is $95 per person which includes your ticket to the conference, a lunch box and your room.  If you want to drive to the American Airlines Center both days, the cost is $63 which includes your ticket and lunch box.  The conference runs from 7:00 pm on Friday to 5:00 pm on Saturday.  Pam Egner has offered to take credit card payments through her office at 903-482-6339 or you can pay her by check or cash.  Please look for the brochure and our sign up sheet on the kiosk or see Pam Egner, Robin Sedlacek or Susan Seagraves.  The deadline for payment is Sunday August 3rd.  If you want to go yourself and need assistance, please let us know.

Fill-the-Bus!

The 2008 Fill-the-Bus school supply drive, a joint effort between Allen Community Outreach, Allen Chamber of Commerce, and AISD will be from August 4 - 15, 2008. There are about 2,300 students in the Allen and Lovejoy ISD that are on the Free and Reduced lunch program and these children will be the benefactors of the Fill-the-Bus program.  In 2007, ACO delivered 2,380 students over 48,000 supplies.

An AISD school bus will be sponsored by local businesses at various locations around town.  You can drop off your school supplies at one of the locations listed on the website or at the ACO office at 301 W. Boyd Drive, Suite A, Allen, Texas.

Drop-off dates are August 4th through August 12th at various locations in Allen.  Go to www.acocares.org for more information.
