Confirmation Class Student Essays

The Lutheran Study - or Confirmation Class - program of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church meets on a weekly basis during the education hour each Sunday morning with Pastor Illausky on the second floor of the education building. Given the importance of the faith-related topics discussed during this two-year program the parents of each student regularly attend and participate in class with their child. Other individuals who might like to “brush up” and/or learn more about the Bible, Luther’s catechism, prayer and other aspects of Lutheran thought and theology are also welcome to attend.

In recent weeks, members of the current confirmation class and their parents completed several survey courses concerning the Old and New Testament, covenantal theology, and personal relationships with God.

As a homework assignment related to those conversations the students were asked to prepare an essay (shown below) which provides a glimpse of their present understanding of and relationship with Jesus.

                                                              What Jesus Means To Me

                                                                     Daerick Seymour

Jesus is to me like honey is to a bee. The bee needs the honey to survive and to feed their offspring. Jesus nourishes me and my family each and every day.

Jesus has saved my soul from my sins and from the devil. Jesus forgives me of all my sins and wrong doings that I’ve committed. Jesus protects me from the devil. My faith in Jesus and my love for Jesus help give me the inner strength to make it through the bad times.

Jesus is like the King of Denmark during World War II who always rode into the streets to look over his people even though Germany had control.

Jesus is our protector and we shouldn’t be afraid of him, but we should have a healthy respect for him.

                                                               What Jesus Means to Me

                                                                     Duncan Forsythe

To me Jesus is a guide, an example to look up to, and a light to brighten up the darkness and look to when things are looking down. Jesus is my savior and my lord. I hope to follow his example and to stick as close to it as I humanly can. I hope others can also look and lead people around them to try to do the same.

I have no (physical) proof of Jesus being in my life. Most of the time when I feel him close I have no idea how he comes to be there. All I can say to anyone is that I have no idea and no need to have one. When I am struggling with my siblings, sometimes I just let go and know that Jesus is helping me try to be a better person and model for my brother and sister. How I know it is him is because I was in a position that most of the time, if not the entire time, before I would of snapped and probably gotten in trouble somehow.

Lately I have become more involved with things at the church. I am planning and making room for many church related activities and am spreading word of events we are doing at school and at scouts. I am taking an example from Jesus and spreading the good news of the lord our god and I am confident that life becomes easier if I just let things go and let Jesus guide me through the hard parts.

At this point in life I am still growing both physically, emotionally, mentally, and religiously. I still have a long ways to go and I know that the hardest parts of life are still to come and I am grateful that even if things look bad that I can be happy that they are not the worst they can be.

                                                             My Relationship with Jesus

                                                                          Max Dooley

Jesus is son of God. Jesus was sent down to spread the word of god throughout the land. Jesus dies so that we may live. He is seated at the right hand of the father.

Jesus is with us through our entire life from when we were born to when we die and then with us in heaven. Jesus will always love us no matter what we do because Jesus is very forgiving. My relationship to Jesus is like no other. Jesus is always there for me when I need him. Jesus love is never ending. The older and more mature I get the closer my relationship with Jesus is always growing. Because getting older means making more decisions, I need Jesus to help me make the right decisions. Jesus always told us to have faith and sometimes when life is hard Jesus is right, we just need to have faith in God.

Like Jesus, I have been baptized as an infant in the faith. Jesus was baptized by his cousin, John. So Jesus makes me appreciate my blessings in life and how fortunate I am to have them. He has also taught the people should love their friends and enemies alike. Even as he hung on the cross dying Jesus forgave the people who killed him. If  Jesus could forgive the people who crucified him in my life I shouldn’t hold grudges because it is very insignificant and I should learn to forgive them.

We are alive today because Jesus died for our sins and that was how God helped us out of our predicament which was death. Thank God for Jesus Christ.
